I recently received my Delegate Pass to Whats Next? held at The ATRiuM, Cardiff (Glamorgan University) on February 6th 2012. It looks a fascinating day full of speakers at the cutting edge of social media and seminars to engage and learn.

As Whats Next? CEO Allan Blair Beaton, Social Media Consultant says,

'It's a day filled with insights and challenges, to help anyone in business to focus their efforts on the most viable, profitable strategies. If you've ignored Social Media or been frustrated by your results in the past, this is going to be the most important date in your 2012 diary.'

A friend, Emma and I attended the launch of Creative Cardiff last night in the Wales Millennium Centre. Sing & Inspire broke in to song followed by talks from organisers of Creative Cardiff and Cardiff Design Festival. From what I understand Creative Cardiff is a platform for creating a critical mass of events around creativity in Cardiff So, promoting Cardiff to the rest of the UK as artistic, musical, theatrical, poetic, designed...

We had an interesting chat about 'sea glass' to a company called Gwydr (which is Welsh for Glass). They make jewellery from glass that has been washed by the sea. I love that we can reclaim something beautiful from all the flotsam and jetsam that comes in on the tide....

I really enjoyed the Worldwide Guitar Connections concert in Cardiff recently on Friday 3 June. The event was organised by my guitar tutor Fernando Aguera. Fabricio Mattos was the touring guitarist. He played a variety of guitar music from around the world, including his home country Brazil. A particularly accomplished player, who as one of the other audience members said to me as we were going out, Fabricio was also extremely humble with his talent.

I was also struck by the Worldwide Guitar Connections project itself. It aims to 'present worldwide works exclusively composed for the guitarist Fabricio Mattos, in a way that brings together the conventional means of production of classical music events and social networks, hi-tech innovations and entertainment.'

On the website Fabricio Mattos says:

"I always wanted to find out how I could transcend the everyday life through art and take it to different places and cultures. I wanted to demystify signs to my audience. Create special moments, perpetuate compositions, and generate emotions without words. Instruct musically in a more humane way. The magic contained in arrivals and departures.'

He was successful in this! As well as playing, he also explained about the sound of the guitar. I wish I could write more on the music he played but the programmes were used again at each concert. You wrote a message for the audience in another country to read! I sent a Welsh greeting of course!

Fabricio Mattos has a demanding schedule with Worldwide Guitar Connections and we were very fortunate to have him here thanks to Fernando.

It’s ME Awareness Week 8 - 15 May and after attending Poetry and Language / Transeuropa at Chapter last Saturday 5 May I was inspired by the theme of displacement and journeys to write the poem Fault Line.

The definition, given at the evening, of translation being ‘same but different’ struck a chord with me. This is often how you feel, appearing the same as others but the fabric of our daily lives massively changed. Thinking about the journey we make from the ‘ill world’ to the ‘well world’, often difficult for many to do...

Always I have strived to find similarities and connections to others, whether they are well or ill, throughout my own illness and recovery. But there is this difference because of health and however much you want it to go away it just won’t.

I accidentally found myself at Poetry and Language - Transeuropa last Saturday 7 May at Chapter.

Two highly esteemed poets Philip Gross (Wales) and Tsead Bruinja (the Netherlands) made rail journeys between Cardiff and Amsterdam, Amsterdam and Cardiff respectively. Writing poems inspired by the experience. Translators had 1 month to translate the text in to 16 European languages, including Italian, Polish, Frisian and Arabic.

As the poets and translators read their respective work, translations were projected on the wall behind, across 4 screens. Philip Gross’s Spoor in Arabic and Finish and Tsead Bruinja's Bed and grave in Italian and Greek. Both poems in English were extremely profound. Hearing them in 16 other languages words fell away. Becoming reliant on performance, delivery and the essence of each emotion enveloped in body and tones specific to each language.

Live translations lifted words off the page making them accessible to 16 other nationalities in the space of half and hour. Also sparking an interesting conversation with the guy next to me on words being tools to convey thought, ideas, marks on the page. How we often all experience what’s said differently. Yet how finding the right word was like a key, which could open up so much more.

Once home I was inspired by the ‘Displacement' theme to write Fault Line - thinking about internal journeys we make. It is ME Awareness week and travelling from the ‘ill world’ to the ‘well world', can often be a journey that for many is too hard….

I briefly just caught the news on Twitter that the Guardian’s venture of GuardianLocal blogs is winding down. Cardiff, along with Leeds and Edinburgh, has been fortunate to be one of the three cities chosen to have a Guardianlocal beatblogger for the past year. As Peter Cox, Chair of Cardiff Civic Society, said on Radio Wales this morning, this innovative scheme introduced a new kind of journalist: the beatblogger. A journalist who is out there in the city, sitting in on meetings, talking to the locals and capturing all through videos, podcasts, photos etc. Through harnessing the great potential of social media in a local context Hannah Waldram has produced GuardianCardiff. It has, says Peter Cox, become the 2^nd biggest hit website in Wales.

My experience of GuardianCardiff and Hannah Waldram has been extremely positive. I was a guest blogger on Cardiff's involvement via Incandescent with World Book Night. GuardianCardiff is successful in operating at a grassroots level, uniting varied and often disparate aspects of community. Letting Cardiff inhabitants know what is happening in the city. Much needed as society becomes ever increasingly global. We need local conversations, people talking with one another about concerns close to them. Simultaneously linking in to wider issues of a national level. It is this fabric of community that GuardianCardiff has fostered, pioneering along with Wales Online yourCardiff, Cardiff Bloggers meetings and local Social Media Surgeries, with which I have some involvement.

When I first heard of GuardianCardiff I thought it was a brilliant and innovative idea. Reading the Guardian now and again itself in a local arts centre, I enjoy many of the articles although as a reader, it can at times, be a little weighty. GuardianCardiff beatblogging is accessible, immediate and relevant. Especially with so many using smart phones and able to access information at the touch of a button. Hannah Waldram has worked tirelessly forging community links to provide a highly professional service, including guest bloggers from hyperlocal blogs. As a tweet received by Peter Cox from West Wales said they had hoped the GuardianCardiff was to become the forerunner in a network of services. Such is the power of this medium - Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos, online clothing company in USA, harnessed the power of bloggers in the release of his book Delivering Happiness in June 2010. 279 blog posts, also posted on Amazon. Amazon sold out of the book on its first day!

To stop such a positive ‘experiment’ mid flow is short-sighted. Conversation is a way forward for journalism and social media is here to stay. From what I gather from the comments on GuardianLocal page further investment is required if the ventures in Cardiff, Leeds and Edinburgh are to be sustained. It is also obvious from the comments that each of the beatbloggers is thoroughly respected in their local areas. Surely this in itself is a measure of the success of the venture. Understandably any venture can only exist if the resources are there to provide it. World Book Night - Free Seamus Heaney Books at Chapter Arts Centre

I have long found poetry and sharing it with others to be a lifeline in my own existence. So great news receiving an email from World Book Night saying I’d been chosen as a giver of the highly regarded Irish poet Seamus Heaney's New Selected Poems 1966 - 1987

Seamus Heaney is a Nobel Prize for Literature Winner 1995 and TS Eliot Prize Winner 2006 and The Forward Prize Winner in 2010. He was also shortlisted for the TS Eliot Prize 2010 for his most recent collection Human Chain, recorded at the TS Eliot Prize Readings at the Southbank Centre this January.

I recently re-encountered Seamus Heaney at an Incandescent meeting – Anahorish, Digging and Night Drive were read by participants and Postscript by myself. It was the first time in twenty years since I had studied his first collection Death of a Naturalist and a few poems from New Selected Poems at University. I remembered his poetry having an earthy, natural and detailed feel. Reading Postscript at Incandescent brought a sense of freedom being immersed in the elements of the coast. Another participant said he loved Postcript so much he had read it at his 50th Birthday celebrations! Sharing Seamus Heaney’s New Selected Poems on World Book Night seems a natural choice.

‘World Book Night represents the most ambitious and far-reaching celebration of adult books and reading ever attempted in the UK and Ireland.

On Saturday 5^th March 20011, two days after World Book Day, with the full support of the Publishers Association, the Booksellers Association, the Independent Publishers Guild, the Reading Agency with libraries, World Book Day, the BBC and RTE, one million books will be given away by an army of passionate readers to members of public across the UK and Ireland.

The book give-away will comprise 40,000 copies of each of the 25 carefully selected titles to be given away by 20,000 ‘givers’, who will each distribute 48 copies of their chosen title to whomever they choose on World Book Night. The remaining books will be distributed by World Book Night itself in places that might otherwise be difficult to reach, such as prisons and hospitals.’ *

Incandescent participants and myself will be at Chapter Arts Centre (between the cinema foyer and cafe) in Cardiff, Wales 6pm - 8.30pm Saturday March 5^th to give out 48 copies of New Selected Poems by Seamus Heaney. Chapter has kindly agreed to host us. So please come along and enjoy a coffee, drinks or a meal and collect your book. Books will be given on a first come first serve basis.

'poems and songs reach us easily nowadays...'

I have recently been enjoying Rhyme and Reason on Radio 4 presented by Bespoken Word’s Mister Gee. He talks with 4 prominent songwriters, Florence Welch, Tori Amos, Tim Rice-Oxley and Billy Bragg about their poetic influences in life and their songwriting. The last one in this four part series is tonight.

American pianist and singer-songwriter, Tori Amos found,

‘I needed to explore in poetry feelings I had that were not being met' and ‘I needed to see how other poets talked about their pain before I did it’.

She describes the process of poetry as ‘The ripping off of the skin so you get to the feelings underneath, muscle and bone’.

Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine highlighted the exploratory nature of both reading poetry and writing songs. How, often, an individual is trying to understand a larger experience:

‘Poets don’t write about what they know, they write about what they don’t know... they're trying to understand something’.

Also emphasizing the intuitive aspect of writing ‘That boundary between awake and sleep. That’s where songs come from’

Rhyme and Reason has reminded me of the inter-relationship, yet also the difference, between poetry and lyricism. In my own experience of both listening too and writing songs and poetry, the creative process is linked yet diverse.

A song often has definite structure with verses and a chorus that is usually repeated. Also sentences and words can be seemly disjointed, even though hinged around a theme. This also occurs in poetry, but because of a song needing to work together strongly with the melody and rhythm the nature of songwriting can be individual. That said poems with a strong rhythmic base can often morph easily in to a song! Snatches of lines from poems can work equally as well in songwriting.

We have also begun to include lyrics at Incandescent meetings held at Cardiff Central Library. Incandescent is a space where people are able to share published poetry and lyrics. At our last meeting an extract of John Keats 'Eve of St Agnes' followed by lyricist Richard Ashcroft’s 'Check The Meaning'. As Michael MacKian, a participant, said “It would be interesting to hear Keats take on those lyrics, as they are really out there on the edge’

A powerful reminder that great wordsmiths are always looking to understand life experience and reach out to their listeners / readers / audience with an expression of the ‘Human Condition’. Whether you are a listener, a fellow writer or just enjoy the spoken word as stimulus for discussion we would love to see you at one of our meetings!

'As the former poet laureate Ted Hughes once wrote to his daughter, Frieda (also a fine poet), that the only way for anyone to improve their own poetry was to read the works of others aloud.'

Irene Davies organised a Zumba Christmas Party on 27th Dec in Cardiff for raising funds for M.E. / C.F.S. / Fibromyaligia, a cause close to my heart!

An eclectic mix of top performers: a local female singer with an amazing voice followed by a fabulous performance from worldwide singer, Sian Evans of Kosheen!

Breakdancers from Swansea were fun as they graced the dance floor with breakbeat moves & some kind of robotics. As were the Zumba line ups we all danced!

Thanks to all involved for bringing the awareness of such a devastating illness to the wider community. An excellent description of what it is like to live with M.E. / C.F.S. / Fibromyalgia was given during the evening.

The story of a man who stood up for what he believed. ‘I had a reference point for true democracy’, said Henry Olonga as he travelled the world as Zimbabwe’s first black cricketer. Now living in exile in the UK Henry Olonga comes across as a man of integrity.

Talking on his new book Blood, Sweat and Treason, the atmosphere in Waterloo Gardens Teahouse is intently focused. Henry Olonga reads an excerpt where, in the 2003 Cricket World Cup, he and team mate Andy Fowler wear a black armband , in protest against the policies of the Zimbabwean Government led by Robert Mugabe.

Tonight, questions on the mix of politics and sport are raised which Henry Olonga answers thoughtfully and honestly, along with a little on the process of getting his life story on to paper with journalist Derek Clements. Repercussions in Henry Olonga's personal life have been great and he questions what difference he made. But at least he lives, in his own words, 'with no regrets' as he ‘seized an opportunity when it is presented'.

I attended with the interest of a writer. But left with an expanded understanding of the global issues facing Zimbabwe in this last decade. Although Henry Olonga's future is uncertain no one never knows who’s hearts are touched when one is true to oneself in the face of great difficulties.

This event marks the first in a series of events to be staged by In the Zone in which a range of speakers will be talking about their involvement and links with sport and how these impact on local, national and international politics.

Listening, Reading Aloud, Writing & 'True Things About Me'

After a soothing session at the spa I was making my way across town to catch the number 17 bus. Thought I’d do my usual wander vaguely around Waterstones bookshop. For some reason it seems to do me good browsing books and items of stationary I believe I may own one day. I arrived at the door to hear chattering people and clinking glasses. The Waterstone’s girl tells me there is an event on tonight, Deborah Kay Davies reading from her new book. I remember I had heard that she had won Wales Book Of The Year Prize last year, but I had never read any of her books. Intrigued I thought I would stay.

Chairs overflowing, sparkling water and wine consumed, I sat quietly at the back. Deborah Kay Davies began reading from a couple of chapters of ‘True Things About Me’. The room fell silent as her clearly crafted words fell effortlessly off the page and in to the audience. A collective listening to mint leaves, a father making his daughter comfortable with a cushion, the fabricated boyfriend and wild-eyed children who loved the dentist. The author’s reading brought to life the very humanity of her characters. Her down to earth and humorous delivery were warming.

For those twenty minutes I was absorbed in her words, the story I had stumbled upon as I was walking home. There’s something about collective listening that brings us together, helps us to switch off from our own concerns and immerse ourselves in another’s life; in this case a woman trying to deal with her feelings after an unexpected sexual encounter. Yes, we still have thoughts about our own lives, but maybe from a new perspective. If I had not heard those chapters spoken I doubt I would ever sit down to read the book, which I now intend to do. I enjoy hearing stories but at times I struggle with sitting still and reading from a book alone. But through listening, I wanted to learn more about the book’s protagonist and her world.

This is the concept behind the groups that are springing up over the country that The Reader Organisation is terming ‘The Reading Revolution’. A group I run called Incandescent is one. Based in a meeting room at Cardiff Central Library, Incandescent provides space for those who enjoy the sound of the spoken word of poetry, through reading aloud and listening. People bring poems they enjoy from modern to old and spend time sharing and discussing. There is something healing about the activity of collective listening that occurs here monthly and in Waterstones tonight. One leaves a calmer, more whole person, having been returned to the root of being through listening to literature and sharing the experience with others.

Listening to Deborah Kay Davies also gave insight to another preoccupation. As an individual who writes, a number of questions on how to write had disturbed my flow for over a year. The past few days I had read Honest Speaks post, 'Writing- am I getting it right?', which voiced many of my own concerns. As I sit in Waterstones an audience member asked ‘Was writing to a deadline hard?’ The author said that as the deadline loomed she had to write 100 pages in 11 days. For a writer who usually takes her time between writing periods, this was an immense task in hand. But she worked 9 till 4 those final days and said ‘When you sit down and do the writing. You’ll do the writing you need to do’. Just write.

When asked whether she ever wrote outside her comfort zone she responded ‘I feel I can write anything I am comfortable to write’. If there's something you feel family, friends may judge ‘don’t let it (their opinions) enter your head’. Just write.

In combination with Honest’s post and Deborah Kay Davies’s advice, I have come face to face with my doubts on how to write. As I begin to sort a lifetime’s writing, sitting in a big crate in my lounge, maybe words will start to flow again. It seems when you ask the bigger questions in life sometimes the answers appear on the most unexpected of ways. I guess the fact I am writing this, part of me has faith I still can.

Enjoyed the unusual experience of watching Serenity Female Voice Choir at St John's Church, Canton last Friday. Unusual as its the first time I've been in the audience instead of singing!

Particularly enjoyed Muse's Butterflies & Hurricanes, All Is Well traditional hymn, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Hush A Bye Mountain, Can't Help Loving That Man & of course Michael Jackson's Blame It On The Boogie!

The vision of Musical Director Mr Patrick Steed tap-dancing down the Church's central aisle also brought a smile to my face! Loving the black with a touch of pink outfits ladies - very glamorous!

Philip Gross on writing poetry at his Readings on June 17th in the new sustainable Cardiff Central Library. Voted one of the top six libraries in the world!
Amongst daily library life renowned poet Philip Gross gave readings from and spoke of his journey with I Spy Pinhole Eye, his English Language Wales Book of the Year Award 2010 Shortlisted book. Interspersing with readings of The Water Table (TS Eliot Prize Award 2009 winner) and children’s book Off Road to Everywhere. His two other recently published poetry collections.
From the photographic starting point of Simon Denison’s pinhole camera images of pylon footings from which his words were stimulated, Philip detailed the collaboration process. Elegantly flowing between ways the brain see’s, mechanics of pylons to pallets of colors. He allowed the audience a personal glimpse into his process of writing and the very nature of poetry itself.
I particularly enjoyed Listening In, a 3-stanza poem where his father's hearing loss and subtleties of sounds intertwine. One audience member hid her tears as it struck a chord with her own father’s situation. It also resonated with my father’s denial of his hearing decline. Although, he heard enough to be reminded of making his own pinhole camera in the 70’s!
This poem steps outside the 14-line sonnet like structure in which the I Spy Pinhole Eye poems are contained. As Philip said,
'Every poem is dancing with the ghost of a sonnet.'
As silence broke by a child calling down the escalator, Philip finished by giving space for all gathered in Central Library’s light and airy Level 2 foyer to ask questions. He gave insightful and responsive answers to all.
I Spy Pinhole Eye is a fascinating and beautiful book. Philip strips all to its essence. The winner of the Wales Book of the Year Award 2010 is to be announced Wednesday 30th June at The St David's Hotel & Spa, Cardiff at a 'glittering ceremony'!

I found this blog post on Terry White's Tech Blog helpful. I attended the Adobe CS5 workshops in Bristol last week and a couple of talks given by Terry White, Worldwide Design Evangelist for Adobe Systems Inc. He was humorous and informative.

Delivering Happiness – a path to profits, passion, and purpose

The title caught my eye when deciding to review first book by Tony Hsieh, CEO, Zappos. It had potential to be a book I could relate too.

I gave my details Wednesday; a speedily 2 days later Delivering Happiness arrived on my doorstep from the USA. Immediately I knew customers mattered to Zappos. I was to learn that Customer Service lies at the heart of the company - practice in line with ethics!

Tony Hsieh’s conversational style is easy to read, engaging the reader in following his process. Lessons learnt and valuable business concepts are shared through personal storytelling of author and colleagues / staff.

I particularly enjoyed Section II Passion & Profits, Chapter 5 - Platform for Growth: Brand, Culture, Pipeline. Here Tony Hsieh outlines Zappos core philosophies - WOW customer service, positive vendor relationship, happiness of employers, blended company culture, transparency and sharing. For once I was reading exactly what I believe. Customer experience is paramount and embracing a wider movement for people to belong, based on core values that can truly be lived.

For an entrepreneur currently beginning a new phase in business life, it is an ideal moment to read ‘Delivering Happiness’. It helped me reflect on past ventures and focus new ideas. All entrepreneurial paths differ but fundamentals remain the same...

...being open to ideas and trusting something will develop. Knowing that like-minded individuals exist and can collaborate, making dreams a reality for the better! Tony Hsieh provides valuable insight in to the mind of an entrepreneur. As a UK reader, the American references can sometimes be an obstacle. However, it is worth overcoming for the gems!

I would definitely recommend Delivering Happiness as an affirmation of positive growth in the wider business and personal vision for all individuals to consider.

‘What’s a CardiffGirlGeek?’ asked a bemused friend of mine when I said I attended the first CardiffGirlGeekDinners event on Thursday 6^th Feb 2010.

Silver and pink balloons lift the atmosphere in a cornered section of Terra Nova Bar, Cardiff Bay. I am amongst the first few to arrive and am greeted warmly by the one of the hosts Chyrelle Rayman-Bacchus.

Having just completed a Creative Web Design Foundation (via Ffotogallery / Cardiff University) I’m keen to meet others in the field. CardiffGirlGeekDinners stems from the original GirlGeekDinners set up in London by Sarah Blower. She found that working in IT could be an isolating experience for women.

Certainly, I remember back to ’96 and being the first school year to take a computer O’level. Having vivid memories of the computer ‘geeks’ being a huddle of dungeon and dragon guys now taking up residence in the computer lab.* Fortunately 24 years later and the launch of CardiffGirlGeek bears no resemblance to my earlier memory.

Having interesting conversations with sociable women from a variety of backgrounds. From providing maths software to schools to being a ‘geek on the side” and part of Cardiff tweetups, to co-running a web design business to a company upgrading hardware for the NHS and a blogging radio journalist student

So, if happily talking about the intricacies of blogging, subtleties of twitter and the art of web design are geeky then it seems that I am officially a CardiffGirlGeek! Cardiff has officially joined the now worldwide GirlGeekDinner phenomenon throughout UK Canada, USA and Europe!

* For the record, I have only ever since ’96 met interesting guys in IT

Being new to the principles of Japanese Noh Theatre and Theatre of Quietude I was a little unsure of what exactly I had witnessed. But I was left with a strong sense of space and impression.

Wet dew on feet. Are you present? Skeleton of leaf. Earth centre rugged yet domesticated. Autumn. Stark side lighting. Nature tearing at edge of order and restrain. Imprint understanding, routine over chaos. Capturing a thought. Movement.

We all inhabit our own worlds. Do we ever meet? Space between the words. Space between lives. Space we inhabit with precision of movement. Gesture intricately performed. A dancers body is a pleasure to absorb.

A bird calling, a bell tolls. Water dropping. Stillness we all need for moments to surface.

I felt a distinct calm wash through me during Told by the Wind. Lightness. Feeling more conscious of the stillness present in life but which we so rarely feel.

This is the first time I had heard Kaite O Reilly’s work and I was struck by her poetics's of writing and detailed quality of image. I also enjoyed the considered performances of Jo Shapland and Phillip Zarrilli. Forming the Llanarth Group.

PS. Chapter’s newly refurbished foyer was a pleasure to gather in beforehand!

My entry for The Mayfly Project. Due to snowy weather I was too late to put my 24 words on the site so here it is!

I came across this link on Honest Speaks. I like the idea of condensing perceptions of the year past into 24 words. When we reflect it can be both joyful and sobering, depending on how we see our year having gone. As The Mayfly website says it meant i focused on the poignant aspects of 2009.
