Great news this morning via Nick Booth the creator of Social Media Surgeries in the UK that collectively we, the Social Media Surgeries (SMS) Movement, has won one of the PM's Big Society Awards for its initiative. Please read Nick's Blog Post for the full details and thanks for mentioning Canton SMS Nick!
This is what David Cameron had to say:
“Congratulations to Nick and all the volunteers who have shared their time and expertise to help so many local groups make the most of the internet to support their community. A great example of the Big Society in action.”
Yes Congratulations Nick and all UK SMS's!
Our Canton Social Media Surgery here in Cardiff, along with Roath SMS and Adamsdown SMS, is part of the wider UK Social Media Surgeries Movement. Launched June 2011 as part of the Cardiff Local Social Media Surgeries, Canton Social Media Surgery holds Surgeries in the Cwtch at Chapter Arts Centre. Our next Surgery is March 7th. Sign up to come along!
Last Year myself and some of the regular Canton SMS Surgeons & Patients put together an audio slide show of our experiences:
Video includes: Patients: Joy, Dan, Gary, Marjorie & Surgeons: Sarah, Francesca Compiled by: Juliette
Over the past year my role as Surgery Manager for Canton Social Media Surgery has been immensely rewarding. I have enjoyed meeting others who have a willingness to pass on their passion for social media to those with less understanding. At the Surgery, I have aimed to create a space that is relaxed and social, as much about talking face to face as it is about tweeting, blogging, and Facebook. (See our Flickr Canton SMS Photostream)
Also our Guest Post on Cardiff Blogs For Love Not Money theme highlights why collectively we run the Surgery. However, to be sustainable long term funds are needed.
Big thanks to all who are making our local Canton SMS Surgery possible:
To Canton Social Media Surgeons over time: Megan Price, Joe Conaghan, Allan Blair Beaton, Jean Baptiste Mac Luckie, Geoff, Louise Weinzwig, Peter Cox, Sarah Hill, Francesca James, Nikki Getgood, Steve Dimmick, Amelia Forsbrook, Jen Thornton, Rhys Gregory
To our host: Chapter Arts Centre for their generosity of allowing us the use of the Cwtch.
To Cardiff Blogs for mentioning our meetings in the announcement sessions.
To Hannah Waldram and Ed Walker for initiating the idea and the previous Cardiff Social Media Surgery.
And all our local supporters who continue to spread the word via Twitter, Facebook and their blogs and of course those who attend the Surgery. There are too many if you to mention personally here but I / We all are very grateful for your support and positive testimonials of coming to Canton SMS.

I recently received my Delegate Pass to Whats Next? held at The ATRiuM, Cardiff (Glamorgan University) on February 6th 2012. It looks a fascinating day full of speakers at the cutting edge of social media and seminars to engage and learn.
As Whats Next? CEO Allan Blair Beaton, Social Media Consultant says,
'It's a day filled with insights and challenges, to help anyone in business to focus their efforts on the most viable, profitable strategies. If you've ignored Social Media or been frustrated by your results in the past, this is going to be the most important date in your 2012 diary.'
I am Surgery Manager of Canton Social Media Surgery, we see many individuals, community groups and non profit organisations struggling to grasp with the new possibilities opening to them through Blogging, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Vimeo, You Tube etc. Allan Blair Beaton is a Social Media Surgeon at Canton Social Media Surgery held at Chapter. All our skilled and dedicated Social Media Surgeons have helped many to find their way to use these free tools more effectively.
