Bespoken Word

on Radio 4 11pm this Thursday 26th Nov.

I was in the audience for this recording at Cardiff University of Radio 4's performance poetry show. You may hear my laughter somewhere!!

It was followed by an inspiring Performance Poetry Workshop by Mr Gee, Bespoken Word presenter:

'When the moment comes the moment will be there' were his wise words about staying pure to your thoughts when writing...

Writing for Performance - Ty Newydd

Just had an amazing week at Ty Newydd on the Writing for Performance Course with Kaite O'Reilly with many thanks to a DAW Bursary. Our creative energies were positively stretched to the maximum in beautiful and nurturing surroundings!

Kaite and the other tutors and speakers: Jenny Sealey - Graeae TheatrePhillip ZarrilliJohn McGrath - National Theatre of Wales were extremely inspiring. As were every one of the other participants, whom i thoroughly enjoyed meeting, writing, devising and performing with.

Black Shoes - Michael Obiora

My sporadic novel reading resurged after finding Black Shoes at an author signing by Michael Obiora at Borders.

An intricately detailed novel which i read over two days!

I was intrigued and enlightened entering the psyche of a young successful black guy. The author skilfully portrays Daniel's complexity, pulling and pushing the reader’s feelings towards his protagonist in diverse directions. Allowing us to see honestly in to all aspects of his life.

It was an emotional journey reminding me persecution of any kind takes a toll on our human form. Finding balance again is a delicate, yet necessary, process.

Although Daniels life is on a more even keel at the end of the book. I’m left with many questions on Paula, Daniel, Safia, possibilities of racial harmony, intercultural trust, fragility of human relationships; black or white...

Deep, unsettling emotions stirred reading Black Shoes. A compelling read!

The Power Of Less - Leo Babatua

I'm reading this book. I highly recommend it. I like the way that simplifying your life is likened to Haiku poetry - reducing to the essential!

The author Leo Babauta recommends telling people about your goal to help achieve it. So, I'm starting on simplifying my paperwork!! Wish me luck!!

Book Launches etc...

I was invited along to a couple of local Book Launches the past weeks...

Peter Finch reading from Real Cardiff Three
@ Waterloo Gardens Teahouse
Juliette Llewellyn Sony Cybershot 09.07.09

Millenium Centre: Two of my friends, Aimé Kongolo with Reciprocities / Réciprocités and Gemma June Howell with Inside the Treacle Well had their debut book launches on 30.06.09 at the Millennium Centre, Cardiff. It was a relaxed and intercultural evening with readings / films from 3 refugee writers alongside readings of 2 Welsh writers. I particularly enjoyed Aimes deeply felt poem L'ardeur sempiternelle / Never-ending ardour, Gemma's sharply observed piece and Alhaji Sheku Kamara's strong and direct performance poetry.

Waterloo Gardens Teahouse: I also attended Peter Finch's Real Cardiff Three Book and Exhibition Launch at Waterloo Gardens Teahouse last week on 09.07.09. It was an intimate atmosphere as we all hushed to listen to observational snapshots of life in Waterloo Gardens. I sank in to the sofa listening to his passionately delivered words which were compelling listening. Exhibition of text extracts from The Gardens in Real Cardiff Three continues for a few weeks:

And finally over the weekend i went to The Dracula Rock Show to see my friends 7 year old son perform as a zombie. A stage full of mini vampires and small zombies is another story......

Been listening to Skin Tight the Sidewalk - Martin Daws CD again more recently. These words resonate with me just now. Have been fortunate to see him perform last year. Check this guy out. The rhythm of his work is very inspiring to me.

For those unaccustomed to contemplation, knowing where to start can be daunting. One simple method is contemplative reading, a traditional Christian practice known as lectio divina, Latin for divine reading of sacred texts.

Choosing a cherished poem can be a useful starting point. 'Poetry is a great vehicle for contemplation because it asks us to aspire to be better, to stretch mentally and experience deep thoughts,' says Rick Benjamin, a poet and lecturer at the institute of Contemplative Studies based at Brown University in the US. He suggests that it doesn't matter what poem you read as long as you love it. Read it aloud so you can savour hearing it in your own voice, finding where the inflections and intonations are. Then memorize it. 'What you are aiming for is to have the poem inside you. Something extraordinary happens when you hold a poem in your own body, your own mind. Its a transfer of one thinker to another.'

Every morning when Benjamin awakes, he recites in his mind a poem by the thirteenth century mystic poet Rumi, Across the Doorsill. 'I sometimes say it 10 times a day or more. it begins, 'The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you / Don't go back to sleep'. It reminds you that life is mysterious and that what we can't see doesn't indicate there isn't a world beyond this one. It is also a way of reminding myself that thinking is important. Its not our actions but the way we think about the world that has real power to transform it.'

Winged Migration

Crammed in small space
Hushed quiet
Screen flickers white
And cracked black

The cinema had become a lifeline. A way for me to participate in the world again, when pubs and clubs had become impossible. Its soft seats and low key energy was perfect.

Winged Migration. Birds soaring high in the sky. More of a documentary than a film. Myriads of sleek winged creatures flying across our world in their instinctual patterns.

We sat transfixed, traveling together. Camera close to their bodies. Clouded sky. Hearts pulsating in tiny forms. Energy of wings in flight.

It took me out of daily existence. Expansiveness of birds flight felt. Five years to complete the film. The notes read, using a variety of contraption tracking the birds; balloons small silent aircraft's, gliders. This French director had a passion for nature, true nature.

Seeing our world from above, that night we are freed from the crazy detail of our lives. I have been traveling too, the seed for the future is planted.

Juliette Llewellyn 17.06.08

I was reading an article in Spirit & Destiny April 09 magazine about Cinema Therapy which resonated with the above piece I had written last year on the film Winged Migration in Chapter Arts.

The basis of Cinema Therapy is that 'a film that really moves you can work wonders for your health and well being.' Spirit & Destiny 04.09

'Films are our stories, and stories have been used therapeutically since primitive humans first began to spin tales around campfires.' Reel Therapy: How movies inspire you to overcome life's problems.
